Samuel Pepys by Claire Tomalin 2002 Knopf

SAMUEL PEPYS, BUREAUCRAT, MUSICIAN, admirer of the ladies, politician and diarist (name pronounced "Peeps"), was an Englishman who lived from 1633 to 1703.  From 1660 to 1669, he wrote an extraordinary personal diary that is not only a valuable source of historical information but also a look into the private life of a fascinating man whose morals were questionable at times but who was not afraid to bare his soul on paper.

He wrote all one-million words of it in one of the many shorthand systems in use then and they were deciphered after his death.  Some passages were censored in the early days and considered unsuitable for us innocent readers.  Such sentiments have subsided and today we can meet the real Mr. Pepys.
