Detailed Description
This is an authentic, highly fascinating 1836 antiquarian printing of The Universal Traveller by the prominent American author and historian Charles A. Goodrich. Published in Hartford by Canfield and Robins, this classic pre-Civil War volume was created as an ambitious "armchair travel" guide for early 19th-century Americans, sweeping readers across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The book is celebrated for its deep, descriptive accounts of world cultures, architectural wonders, religious practices, and daily societal structures as perceived in the 1830s. It features unique period typography, a double-column layout, and a wealth of charming, historic woodcut illustrations depicting global landmarks and traditional regional dress. A remarkable historical artifact, it is perfect for collectors of early American geography books, antique travelogues, or decorative 19th-century leather bindings.

Condition Report
Overall Condition: Very Good vintage condition for an antiquarian text that is nearly 190 years old. 1/2 of spine is missing

Binding & Structure: The original leather binding remains structurally sound and intact. Inner hinges are secure, keeping the entire text block firmly attached to the covers—a rare find for school and reference books of this generation.

Exterior: Honest, historic character ("it shows its age"). The antique leather shows typical, expected surface scuffing, edge rubbing, and minor corner bumping, but it retains a highly dignified, rustic shelf presence.

Interior: Very readable. The text remains completely clear, complete, and flat. Pages exhibit standard, uniform browning (toning) and light to moderate foxing (spotting) completely characteristic of 1830s American paper stock, but free from structural text loss or heavy modern ink marks.
